The man in the pictures is named Peter Gordon. In 1863, he escaped slavery by running for ten days before he finally found a Union Army regiment that took him in. His scars are horrifying, but the focus and dignity in his eyes is also amazing and inspiring. Here a man with no shoes and wearing rags sits with dignity and pride as his picture is taken. It shows the strength of the ancestors before us as well as their power, which is still within us. Anything is possible. We can’t be broken and we continue to shine under the darkest of circumstances. Don’t let the world forget that and what we have come from.
