When Kwame Ture, formerly known as Stokely Carmichael, visited Howard University in 1992 after the Rodney King American upheaval, he said, "You can't schedule a riot." What he meant by that is: urban unrest, conventional riots, are expressions of a lack of action and organization. They are simply violent explosions of pain, anger, and, ultimately, helplessness, and can not be summoned upon demand because we got tired of screaming and couldn't think of any other way to be heard. He told the students that day that riots were not a show of strength or power, but weakness. He told them that true power can not be achieved without unity, organization, and proactive action. He implored them to learn, share their knowledge, and build coalitions everyday that create productive and focused economic, spiritual, intellectual, political, and emotional riots of progress, growth, and evolution. That is our destiny, legacy, and if any of us should fall along the way, continue the journey.
