The title of Malcolm X's speech, "The Ballot or the Bullet", to many people may sound like a provocation for violence, an invitation to choose between voting and rebellion. That's one way to look at it. Another is that Malcolm was saying that if we didn't use our voting rights to choose candidates who reflected our core beliefs of liberty, justice, and freedom for all, that we would fall victim to candidates who just might take those things away from us, and maybe even take our lives as well. Plus, with the ballot we could shoot a bullet of liberation that pierced the heart of deception, injustice, bondage, and corruption, and ended them forever. That's what Malcolm thought then, and today, hopefully, we still can.
